Stefano Cacciatore, MD, presented at the 37th Annual Florida Geriatrics Society Symposium, “Advancing the Art & Science of Geriatric Healthcare in Florida,” held in Clearwater Beach, Florida.
The annual symposium brings together physicians and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of older adults, with a program focused on translating current evidence into better geriatric care across clinical settings.
In the presentation, “Intrinsic Capacity and Frailty: From Theory to Practice,” Dr. Cacciatore discussed the evolution of the World Health Organization healthy aging framework, the concept of intrinsic capacity, and its relationship with frailty and functional ability. The talk also explored the Integrated Care for Older People approach and the potential role of intrinsic capacity assessment in more proactive, person-centered models of care.
The presentation emphasized that intrinsic capacity and frailty should be viewed as complementary rather than competing concepts: intrinsic capacity can support the monitoring and preservation of physical and mental abilities over time, while frailty remains important for risk stratification, prognosis, and clinical decision-making.
